Recently, a model I chat with regularly mentioned some winter 2020 makeup trends she found in a well-known women’s magazine. She wanted to try them but was worried about what the makeup would look like on cam. It’s a valid concern, but there are ways to successfully bring these looks from the runway to your cam room.

Here are some of the top winter 2020 makeup trends and how to make them work for you on cam:
Add a Pop of Color to the Lower Waterline

This trend is the easiest way to give your eyes some oomph without straying too far from your normal routine. Just line the inner rim of your lower lash line with a brightly colored eyeliner, and that’s it! You’ve taken your look to the next level with very minimal effort. Make sure you choose something waterproof, however, so you don’t end up with colorful streaks running down your face as things get steamy during a show.

My favorite is MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Resist Color Pencil Eyeliner because it comes in a vast range of colors, the texture is smooth and you can find it worldwide. It’s a bit of a splurge at $22, but it won’t move until you take it off. Plus, your pencil will last longer, since you won’t need to touch up as often.

Glossy Eyelids

This trend may seem a little high fashion, but it’s easy to do and looks great on camera. Start by sweeping one solid eyeshadow across your lid. Next, dab a tiny bit of MAC Strobe Face Glaze ($28) or e.l.f. Cosmetics Jelly Pop Face and Eye Gloss ($6) onto your lid with the tip of your finger. If you don’t have access to either of these products, you can also use a clear lip gloss. Just be sure not to apply the gloss directly from the wand to your eye. Instead, pat the gloss onto the back of your hand, then pick up some of the product with your finger or a damp (not wet) cotton swap and apply it to your lid. And just like that, you’re done!

Pro Tips:

If you plan on wearing false lashes, keep your shine product away from the lash line. Otherwise, it will be impossible to get your lash glue and lashes to stay.
Ensure all of your other eye products (mascara, eyeliner, etc.) are waterproof, so they don’t smudge if they come in contact with the shine product.
If you decide to go the lip gloss route, make sure the tube has never been used on your lips to avoid getting bacteria on/in your eye. An eye infection is not the look you want on cam!
90s Makeup

One of the biggest trends for winter 2020 is 90s makeup, which is perfect for cam models, because matte looks like these tend to have a lot of staying power. Go for dark, reddish-brown lips, simple dark eyeshadow and minimal face makeup to pull this off. In the 90s, most people didn’t bother with heavy contour, poppin’ highlight or any of the other extras, so this look is an easy fix when you don’t have much time to get ready before logging on for the day (or night).

Start by selecting brown, dark nude tones for your eyes and lips. KKW Beauty makes a fantastic line of 90s inspired matte lipsticks ($18 each) and lipliners ($12) with lots of options for different skin tones if you’re having trouble choosing the right shade. If you can’t get your hands on KKW Beauty products due to tight COVID shipping restrictions, NYX Lip Lingerie Nude Matte Lipstick is just as good, and you can get it for under $10. They offer a ton of 90s inspired shades, but my favorite is a rich brown hue called Beauty Mark in honor of 90s supermodel Cindy Crawford.

As for the eyes, keep it simple with a single brown eyeshadow across the lid and a lighter matte color to highlight the brow bone. Keep your eyeliner minimal and skip the wing, as well, since the look you’re going for is more grunge meets supermodel than editorial.

Deep Plum Lips

If you’re looking to stand out on your site’s main page, this trend is perfect and very easy to replicate. To get this look, grab a long-lasting matte formula lipstick with a matching lip liner to keep everything from feathering as you bring visitors to their knees with your sexy Morticia Adams vibe. My current favorite is L’Oreal Rouge Signature Matte Lip Stain in I Enjoy because it’s easy to find and costs just over $10. Pair this with L’Oreal Colour Riche Matte Lip Liner in Curiosity Killed The Matte for a plum pout that will stay put until you take it off. NYX Suede Matte Lipstick in Subversive Socialite ($8) is another excellent option, and they have a matching lipliner for just $4.

Crystal Embellished Eyes

Gluing crystals over your eye makeup is by far the most dramatic winter trend, but it’s one that has piqued the interest of many models who want to bring their holiday glam to the next level. Keeping the jewels in place can be tricky, but it can work if you use the right products. Once you complete your makeup routine, set everything with a translucent powder.

Then, using a cotton swab or the bottom end of a small eyeliner brush, put a dab of eyelash glue like Ardell Duo Lash Adhesive or Eylure 18-Hour Clear Finish Lash Glue where you want to place your jewels. Let the glue dry for 30-45 seconds until it becomes tacky, then place your gems one at a time. The easiest and most secure way to try out this trend is to do a bejeweled eyeliner. This look works surprisingly well because the jewels sit on top of your lash line, which helps keep them in place, especially if you are wearing false lashes.

Just do your eye makeup as usual, and once your lash glue is dry, dot on some extra glue above the band. Then, pop some small crystals across the lash line, winging it out for extra drama. I tested this one myself, and it stayed surprisingly well! I only lost a few jewels toward the end of my day, but they were super easy to glue back in place.

I hope these tips help you end 2020 on a glamourous note. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

This story originally appeared in the December 2020 issue of XBiz Magazine.

Creative expression is a big part of camming, and makeup is just one thing models use to showcase their style.
