The Basics of Broadcasting – Lighting

Great lighting is a simple way to take your shows to the next level. It can flatter your features, improve your picture quality, and help you set the mood for what kind of show you want to put on.

Lighting can be one of the most overlooked elements of camming because it’s not necessarily “required” for broadcasting, but it really is a key component to your success on Cams.com. There’s a reason Hollywood blockbusters have lighting budgets that are in excess of $500,000. Even your favorite social media influencers invest thousands in the proper equipment because they understand how important lighting is if you are going to make your living on camera.

Obviously you aren’t going to spend thousands of dollars on lighting for your room, but there are plenty of affordable ways to light up your world on a budget.

If you’re just getting started and really don’t have a lot of money to invest, try starting out with something simple like a tabletop ring light. You can get a small one like this for under $20, and while it will only light up a small area it is still far better than relying on a regular lamp. Remember, the more that the camera has to interpret lighting, the more it’s going to pixelate which is not what members look for when deciding if they want to take you private or not. Potential customers are enticed by a clear picture, and even this simple ring light can help with that tremendously.

If you have a little more budget to work with, you can invest in the larger version like this that will really illuminate your room and make things looks crisp, colorful, and more upscale.

Once you feel you are really ready to invest in superior lighting (and we highly suggest that you do) we recommend a 3-point lighting system like the one pictured here:

This will provide you with the best lighting possible no matter where you are and what you are doing, and because the lights are LED they will not heat up your room so that job is left strictly to you.

Pro tip: Make sure your lights are no closer than 3 feet (4 meters) away from you, otherwise they may be too bright and wash you out, which is not a good look. Depending on the area, the back light can also be on the background, if it’s too bright when placed directly on you.
